PETER SAVILLE: ESTATE 1-127

The Ghostly Store

Edited by Heike Munder / Text by Sean Snyder, Wolfgang Tilmans, Sarah Morris, and Michael Bracewell

“Peter Saville is best known for his iconic white-on-black cover for Joy Division’s classic Unknown Pleasures and for New Order’s “Blue Monday” single (which, it should be noted, was the main inspiration behind Spectral Sound’s early sleeves). The prolific UK graphic designer also co-founded Factory Records with Tony Wilson, and co-designed the infamous Hacienda nightclub. Saville’s finest work—including record covers for Patti Smith, Roxy Music, Wham!, Suede, and Pulp—is collected in Peter Saville: Estate 1-127.

Paperback, 8 × 10.5 in. / 272 pgs./ 240 color”

“CFAM is proud to premiere this exhibition of rare, Stalinist-era propaganda posters from the collection. Following an extensive and well-documented conservation process, this selection of Russian posters from the 1930s are shown along with a group of American and British propaganda posters from World War I. The two groups invite dialogue between visual representations of the machine, constructions of masculinity and femininity, urbanization, and nationalism. Each group also stands on its own as representations of the power of the image—and the artist—in social and political history.”

MICR

The MICR typeface is a new discovery for me. I've always noticed the modern-looking typeface on my checks, but until now i've come to believe the typeface-font is truly ingenious. I found out that when M-agnetic I-nk C-haracter R-ecognition was designed, each character had to be designed to contain enough iron oxide for all the magnetized letters in the alphabet and numbers 0-9. That's balance in design and gotta love the rounded corners. It feels more human, you know.

WIKIPEDIA.ORG:

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, or MICR, is a character recognition technology used primarily by the banking industry to facilitate the processing of cheques. The technology allows computers to read information (such as account numbers) off of printed documents. Unlike barcodes or similar technologies, however, MICR codes can be easily read by humans.

MICR characters are printed in special typefaces with a magnetic ink or toner, usually containing iron oxide. As a machine decodes the MICR text, it first magnetizes the characters in the plane of the paper. Then the characters are then passed over a MICR read head, a device similar to the playback head of a tape recorder. As each character passes over the head it produces a unique waveform that can be easily identified by the system.

The use of magnetic printing allows the characters to be read reliably even if they have been overprinted or obscured by other marks, such as cancellation stamps. The error rate for the magnetic scanning of a typical check is smaller than with optical character recognition systems. For well printed MICR documents, the "can't read" rate is usually less than 1% while the substitution rate (misread rate) is in the order of 1 per 100,000 characters.
MICR is standardized by ISO 1004:1995.

LP3 Contest

iMeem and XL Records held a design-contest to create a product using the original images from Ratatat’s LP3 album. I came up with a T-shirt design. Admittedly, my T-shirt design is pretty weak so I doubt I’d even place. Nonetheless, here it is.

Unutilized Creations

In the previous version of this website, I used color and 60’s advertising as my inspiration (damn you “Mad Men”). I chose not to use this image for the ‘header’ because the theme just didn’t work. Download from the Shared page.

Andy Warhol Personalities

Cornell Fine Arts Museum:
Andy Warhol Personalities - June 5th - January 3rd, 2010

Andy Warhol Personalities features Polaroid photographs in the Permanent Collection taken by Warhol during the 1980’s of socialites, celebrities, and patrons, including Carolina Herrera, Pia Miller, and Ric Ocasek. For Warhol, these photos served as a kind of “sketchbook,” a quick way to record source material for future use. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) figured prominently in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, which saw a shift away from traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture. His renown as a painter, printmaker, and filmmaker, however, was often overshadowed by his “celebrity lifestyle.” The Polaroids on view document his diverse social circle as well as his creative process. Lost Designs

A while back I entered Stardust’s T-Shirt Design Contest. I lost to the “kung-fu kicker” design. Here was my design entitled, “Born Good with a Desire to Be Bad!”

QWERTY Keys

Download: QWERTY (.zip contains .AI file)

Here's another download file for educators. Are you working on an computer instructional document that requires keyboard graphics from the Qwerty layout? The QWERTY download file was created from the Qwerty typeface, and converted to outlines. Transparency has been preserved, color: black, CS3 file format using Adobe Illustrator. File contains the rest of the PC keys (i.e. spacebar, shift, etc), but not all.

Glyphs

What are glyphs? Fonts contain many sorts of characters that are called, glyphs. Glyphs include: Command, Control, Option or other similar looking characters. When writing educational-training documents, I spend a lot of time tracking down images of keyboard glyphs. Finally, I was fed up with repeating myself, so I created a time-saving, vector-based compilation of commonly used glyphs.

Click the download link from below or visit the Shared page to download Adobe Illustrator CS3 file. Click the eye-icon in the Layers palette to reveal glyph image. Export each glyph-layer that you need, or save as Adobe Photoshop file.

Señor Coconut

senor coconut

I love the sexy album cover! Upon closer inspection, I noticed something weird about it. I located a high-res version of the cover and found that it had been edited (probably with the clone-tool in Photoshop). Click on the picture above to view the high-res version. Look around the girl’s forehead. See the mistake. I saw different versions of the same cover on the web. Some did not show the editing mistake, while others did (including Apple iTunes).
